The Land of Wine and Myths – The land of Idones
The bond between Drama and wine goes back to ancient Greece.

The history of wine can be traced back to 4300 BC at Dikili Tash, an ancient archaeological site, close to our premises. The site’s name, which translates to “upright stone,” marks a significant chapter in viticulture’s origins. Here, archaeologists uncovered pressed grape seeds: the earliest known traces of winemaking in all of Europe.
This land was once home to the Idones and Satrae, ancient Greek-Thracian tribes devoted to the worship of Dionysus, the god of wine and feasts. Centuries later, not far from the foothills of Mount Menoikio- in the middle of our Kali Vrysi vineyards – archaeologists uncovered yet another relic of the past: the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Dionysus, dating from the 4th century BC.
Long before wine became a global symbol of culture and celebration, here in Northern Greece it was a ritual, a gift, a devotion – and Dionysian festivals continue to honor this timeless tradition even today.
Vineyards
Our vineyards lie at the crossroads of myth and innovative viticulture.
The region’s balanced continental climate, with the Mount Falakro, Menoikio and Orvilos and the valleys of Drama, create a unique microclimate that allows grapes to develop distinct aromas, grow with minimal intervention, and express the true character of the terroir and the varieties. Our private vineyards are next to Natura 2000 habitats, where native plants and wildlife thrive. The vines grow not in isolation, but in dialogue with a living ecosystem.
Since 1979, at Estates Costa Lazaridi, we proudly carry this heritage forward
